The Cleveland Play House, established in 1915, was America's first professional theater company. It is also America’s oldest regional theater.
The Play House produces a regular schedule of comedies, drama, and musicals throughout the season, including frequent world premieres. Some of theater's biggest names have played in the Play House, including Hal Holbrook, Tom Hanks, and Ed Asner.
The Building:
The Cleveland Play House commissioned a new theater complex on Euclid Ave, which was completed in 1983. The building, designed by architect Philip Johnson, includes the 744-seat Bolton Theater, the 503-seat Drury Theater, the 147-seat Brooks Theater, and the 322-seat Baxter Stage. In addition the theaters, the building has a great rotunda lobby that frequently hosts art exhibits.
More than Theater:
The Cleveland Play House's mission includes more than performance. It's also dedicated to education. The Play House's popular children's theater program, called the "Curtain Pullers", was founded in 1933. The Play House also conducts adult acting classes and workshops as well as a professional actor training program in conjunction with Case Western Reserve University.
